Right, for those of you who have not watched Battlestar Galactica.. DO IT. Its amazing!!! but here is a little background info to get you going 🙂

Battlestar Galactica is a television programme that consists of a hybrid genre – science fiction and military/war. The series was created by Ronald D Moore and David Eick. The original Battlestar Galactica was shown in 1978.

The series started in December 2003 with a miniseries that lasted three hours. The full programme ran for another four series and finished in March 2009.

Many award winning actors starred in the show. This included Edward James Olson (Admiral William Adama) and Mary McDonnell (President Laura Roslin).

Battlestar Galactica won the Television Critic’s Association’s “Programme of the Year” Award and was also nominated for an Emmy for its’ writing and directing.

Battlestar Galactica is set in our humanities past, in a far off part of the Galaxy. The people live on twelve planets known as the Twelve Colonies. The planets are called Caprica, Aquarion, Aerilon, Canceron, Gemenon, Leonis, Libran, Sagittaron, Scorpia, Tauron and Virgo; after the twelve signs of the Zodiac.

In the history of the Colonies, there had been a war with the Cylons. The Cylons were a robot race that was created by humans to be slaves. The Cylons rebelled against this and started the war. Humans freed them and both races lived apart for forty years. The opening credits of the film read: “The Cylons were created by man. They evolved. They rebelled. There are many copies. And they have a plan.”

In the present day Battlestar Galactica, the Cylons launch a sneak attack that was aided, unknowingly, by Dr Gaius Baltar, who was seduced by a Cylon, which had human appearance. This attack kills most of the human population on all of the twelve planets.

Around 50,000 humans survive and they fee the planets on any form of spacecraft that they can find. The ship that the story is centred around, The Battlestar Galactica, is the only military ship that appears to have survived the attack and as such, it takes command of the civilian survivors. The fleet start a journey towards the mythical thirteenth colony, called Earth, however Admiral Adama admits to President Roslin that this was a lie to keep morale up in the fleet.

However, there are many problems that make a difficult situation even worse. The fleet are continuously under attack from Cylon Raiders and the Cylons have managed to infiltrate the fleet and carry out sabotage. There are also a lot of political issues facing the Fleet and those must be sorted out if they are to complete their journey.

Throughout the Battlestar Galactica sage, there are hints that Admiral Adamas’ lie bout Earth may be more truthful that anyone could have hoped.

Battlestar Galactica was highly popular in Europe, Australia and the US and it also created a spin off programme called Caprica, which began in January 2010 and is shown on the SyFy channel. Caprica is set 58 years before the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica.
